Walk back from Brighstone and/or Shorwell via Coast.
I do like walking along the coast and the sea cliffs so I think this walk is good to do. However it is complicated and changeable due to coastal erosion. In many places there are long diversions inland where the path has slipped into the sea.
I think Shorwell is pronounced 'shorrell'?
There are various options:
- Get off the bus at Shorwell and walk to the coast at Shepherds Chine then back along the coast. This is what I have done in past years but due to coastal erosion this is difficult.
- Get off the bus at Shorwell and walk to Brighstone via Yafford, this is a nice walk along the stream although there was some walking along the lane. Then along Chilton Lane to the coast and back along the coast. This avoids the diversion at Chilton Chine.
- For a shorter walk get off the bus at Brighstone and go along Chilton Lane as above.
All these walks have a sting in the tail when you get close to Freshwater Bay. The coastal path is gone so you have to go up to the golf course and back down to Freshwater Bay.
On my holiday there was a convenient bus at the end of the house drive around 09:40 to Newport via Brighstone and Shorwell. Bus 12 is not very frequent so check the bus timetable when you go.
I got off the bus at Shorwell Crown Inn.
I went down Fine Lane and followed a footpath to Wolverton Manor:
Past the Mill at Yafford:
Along some footpaths to Brighstone. There are some benches by the road where I had a snack and watched a constant stream of people going to the local shop. |
Then along Chilton Lane to the coast
Chilton Chine. Going by this route avoids this closed path.
Day by day you can see the path slipping into the sea:
There are dinosaur footprints along the coast if you can find them. I think the tide was too high when I went.
It is good to time it just right to get to Compton Farm as a number 12 bus arrives. I didn't plan it I just got lucky. This avoids having to climb up to the golf course at the end of the walk. |

If you missed the bus you may have to follow the path up to the Military Road:
Across the military road and up to the golf course.
Longer Walk
If you wanted an even longer walk it would be good to walk back from say Blackgang Chine.
I think that would only be possible in summer when the Island Coaster busses are running.
I went past it in 2010

About This SiteHere is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited. The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website. |
