Holidays Abroad - Ramsau.
Ramsau am DachsteinI went on a HF cross-country skiing holiday 12-19 Jan 2002. By the 2001/2002 season HF had stopped offering downhill skiing so I tried cross-country. Its good being able to get into the alpine mountains in winter. |

I think there were only about 5 guests on the holiday plus a HF leader.
The hotel was the Timmelbauerhof it was next to one of the ski routes (loipe). The cross-country tracks are made by mechanized trail groomer. ![]() |

The HF leader did the skiing tuition but I think it would have been better to have had some expert local tuition. I remember spending a lot of time going over the same bit of flat track not really sure what I should be learning. Then when we eventually got onto the steeper section I didn't know how to slow down.
Also I had to unlearn downhill skiing techniques. When you get to a sharp corner the tracks stop and you have to step round the corner, but if you are used to downhill skis the instinct is to use the edge which doesn't work on cross-country skis.
Ramsau is quite a small place the biggest shop was Billa. |

| We had a day off to get the cable car to go up to Dachstein glacier. | ![]() |
From Ramsau you can see Schladming in the valley. When we were there the Planai piste was floodlit for the Slalom race.
There is also a ski jump at Ramsau

About This SiteHere is some history of former HF houses I have visited (there are also some pages about getting to, and walking from, HF houses without using a car). Over the years I have had holidays in houses that HF have closed. I think it would be good if there were somewhere on the HF website where peoples memories could be stored and made available online. I know that HF have a paper history archive at Newfield Hall and there is an online book by Harry Wroe but I would see this as something HF could do which is more of a online community thing. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. |
