Getting to Peveril of the Peak by public Transport
Image from Google Street View.
The nearest rail stations are Derby or Buxton. I went from Derby.
From Derby Station
From Derby rail station you can either book a taxi direct or get a bus to Ashbourne.
Getting from the rail station to the bus station in Derby is a bit complicated. I ended going through the 'Derbion' shopping centre although I suspect it would have been easier to walk next to the river Derwent .

From Ashbourne you can either take a taxi, the Derbyshire Connect Bus Service or the High Peak bus.
The Derbyshire Connect Bus Service is a door-to-door, on demand bus service, it must be booked in advance. I have not used Derbyshire Connect so I would be interested to hear any reports if you try it.
In Feb 2024 the HF website gave the price of 'Ashbourne Taxis' from Ashbourne to Peveril of the Peak as £10 but I was charged £12. I emailed HF about this, expecting them to update the website, instead they removed all taxi prices from the whole site. Unfortunately HF are giving less and less help to those of us who are trying to use public transport and to force everyone to use a car.
Or the 441/442 bus from Ashbourne to Tissington. There seems to be a bus stop called 'gates' where the bus turns off the A515 to go into Tissington. From there there is quite a long walk along Washbrooke Lane, Narlows Lane and Wintercroft Lane to get to Thorpe.
I did think about walking along the Tissington Trail from Ashbourne to the house. The Tissington Trail is a bike/walking path along a disused railway. The surface is not too bad but I don't think it is good enough for a wheelie case, it would be an option if you could travel with a rucksack only.
From Buxton Station
I have not gone this route but there is the 441/442 bus described above in the opposite direction from Buxton to Tissington. Again, you would have to get off at 'gates' after the bus has gone through Tissington to join the A515. From there there is quite a long walk along Washbrooke Lane, Narlows Lane and Wintercroft Lane to get to Thorpe.
Peveril of the Peak House
This was my room the first time I stayed there, I think I must have been given a free room upgrade. The only issue with the room was the creaking floorboards which was not a problem for me but if there was a room below they might have been annoyed.
Nothing like waking up at HF on a nice crisp morning.

Thorpe Village Hall
Thorpe Cloud and Bunster Hill
When I was there the stepping stones were damaged due to floods:
Tissington Trail
In the other direction along the Tissington Trail is Newton House at Newton Grange which was the HF house in the area until 2012:
Ashbourne
Ilam village and Ilam Hall
A stately home built in the 1820s, partly demolished in the 1930s. It is now a YHA youth hostel owned by the National Trust. It is set in large parklands that are open to visitors and is a Grade II* listed property.

About This SiteHere is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited. The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website. |
