HF Houses - Alnmouth - Leaving the Car at Home.
Lots of castles and wildlife to see on the rugged Northumberland coastline but be careful to avoid being hit by golf balls as Alnmouth to St Andrews is one continuous golf course.
Getting to Alnmouth by Public Transport
There is a railway station at Alnmouth and it is on the east coast mainline. The station is about a 30 minute walk from the HF house Nether Grange.
There is a bridge between the platforms with lifts. If you are walking to the house you don't need to use the footbridge as there is a drive up to the road from either side.
Using the bus from the station to Alnmouth is a bit complicated. The X18 bus goes to Alnmouth but it only stops at the station evenings and Sundays. Otherwise you have to catch the X20 for a few stops and then catch the X18. I found it easier to walk, the roads have paths which are fine for wheelie cases.
The House
One time I was in this room which had a nice view over the golf course to the sea.
Another time I was in the annex here which was a nice quiet room.
Walking From Alnmouth Without a Car
You can catch the bus to places such as Alnwick and Warkworth and then walk back to the house.
When the summer timetable is operating its also possible to go to Bamburgh and places up to Berwick-upon-Tweed by bus.
The buses no longer go round the Alnmouth one way system, instead you need to walk to the Methodist Church bus stop. The bus goes past in the other direction, as shown above, then around the roundabout and then to the bus stop.
Unfortunately, outside the summer timetable (June - Aug) I could not find but that goes north along the coast to places like Bamburgh.

- X18 Newcastle to Morpeth Alnwick Seahouses and Berwick
- X20 Newcastle to Ashington and Alnwick
Alnwick
If you get off the bus at the infirmary bus stop you can visit Barter Books which is a quirky second hand book shop in the former Alnwick railway station. Or you can stay on the bus for the centre of Alnwick.
On the other side of Alnwick is Alnwick Castle.
There are several routes you can walk back to Nether Grange from Alnwick, you can walk back along the river Aln and under the Alnmouth Viaduct.
Or you can cut across and walk along the Aln Valley Railway where they have re-layed a short section of track.
Or on the other side of Alnwick is Hulne Park.
Entrance is free, its only open from 11:00 to 16:00.
Warkworth and Amble

The X18 to Warkworth and Amble is quite frequent (one per hour) and its a nice walk back to the house along the coast. When you get close to Alnmouth you need to go back to the road, don't try to wade across the river Aln.
Dunstanburgh Castle

I went by bus in 2017 but its only possible in summer timetable now.
Craster

I went by bus in 2017 but its only possible in summer timetable now.

About This SiteHere is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited. The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website. |
