Former HF Houses - Arran.
I have been looking back at my pictures of Arran in 2011, when HF owned the house (the current partner hotel is a different house). Here we are waiting for the walk to start on the first day at the front of the house in Lamlash. The house looks very nice but my room was in one of the huts at the back, I can't find any pictures I took of them, they were basic and cold but they were en-suite and they had an electric heater so that's all I needed.
Ardrossan to Brodick. I think it makes the holiday more special when you arrive by boat (I like Freshwater Bay for the same reason).
The first view of Goat Fell from the boat.
This is the introductory walk around on the first evening. I have no idea what he was saying because I was playing with panorama mode on my camera.
Looks like a walk back to the house.

Some of the walks had quite a lot of ascent.
I remember seeing red deer all over the island.
I think this must be the ferry to Holy Island which some of us took on the day off.
I think this is the party taking a rest on the way up to Goat Fell (874m).
Arran was another house that HF found difficult to sell. I think they only sold it relatively recently. I guess HF have special requirements for houses that makes it hard to buy and sell them?
According to the table at the back of Harry Wroe's book, HF owned the house from 1925.

About This SiteHere is some history of former HF houses I have visited (there are also some pages about getting to, and walking from, HF houses without using a car). Over the years I have had holidays in houses that HF have closed. I think it would be good if there were somewhere on the HF website where peoples memories could be stored and made available online. I know that HF have a paper history archive at Newfield Hall and there is an online book by Harry Wroe but I would see this as something HF could do which is more of a online community thing. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. |
