HF - Porlock Weir Car Free
This page is mostly intended to show a possible walk when staying at HF Holnicote House Selworthy (see the page about Selworthy here). From HF Holnicote House you can catch the bus to Porlock Weir which is the end of the route. Note if you catch the bus before 09:30 English bus passes don't work, when I went (Nov 2025) the fare was £2.60. There is a layby with 'bus stop' written on the road but no bus stop sign. It is just past the turn off for the NT offices. |

The bus at Porlock Weir:

We walked in this direction past the harbor:

There was quite a strong stream going across a shingle beach which was quite difficult to cross.
| The coastal path then went uphill through these tunnels: | ![]() |
| Above the tunnel is a blue plaque for Ada Countess of Lovelace. | ![]() |
The path climbed quite high and eventually got to the 'Toll Road'. I was tempted to go up to Hawkcombe Head (436m) but that seemed a bit far for a winer walk and I didn't want to go down the steep path so I walked to Porlock along the Toll Road which is a quiet lane.
There was a seat by the Toll Road, with good views where I had lunch:

About This SiteHere is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited. The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website. |
