HF - Minehead Car Free

Minehead could be a transit point when traveling from the mainline station at Taunton to the HF house at Selworthy. The page about Selworthy is here.

Or Minehead could be a place to stop on the way and extend the holiday.

To get from Taunton to Selworthy requires two buses:

I considered these two buses in one day but it would require getting to Taunton Station early which is difficult if you are coming a long way.

When I went the times were as follows:

This takes 1.5 hours because it goes via Watchet. Then you have a long wait for the bus to Selworthy.

So, if the buses are on time, it just misses the bus to Selworthy and you have a long wait.

Route 28 arrives at 'The Parade':

Alternatives to the Route 10 from Minehead to Selworthy are:

No. 10 Bus

The Number 10 goes from Minehead to Porlock Weir stopping at Holnicote House on the way.

If you don't have much time to make the connection its best to get off route 28 at 'The Parade' then catch route 10 at 'The Avenue'. Despite the different name these stops are on the same road. After you get off at 'The Parade' cross the road and walk along the road past Greggs to here: picture
If you have more time then a more pleasant place to swap buses is to go on to the next stop at the heritage railway station. There are lots of seats here but you can't see the bus coming from the seats so you have to be standing at the stop in time. picture

Or you could go on to the end of the 28 route here at Butlins gates here:

Walks from The Minehead without a Car

Watchet

The 28 bus to Taunton goes via Watchet so this is a good opportunity to have a linear walk along the coast.

The bus stop is next to the Heritage railway station:

Watchet harbor:

Walk past the harbor. It looked like there were some interesting small museums in Watchet but they were not open when I went.

After the harbor the road starts going uphill. When I went the road was closed to cars due to costal erosion but it was passable on foot. After the road turns left there is a footpath to the right (at Daw's Castle on the map but not much of it to see).

At this point the footpath goes inland a bit, next to the road and caravan park. It rejoins the coast at the Blue Anchor Pub.

About This Site

Here is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited.

The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost.

This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website.
