I got the bus out and walked back along the Esk Valley Way which roughly follows the river Esk and the Esk Valley Line, which is part of the national rail network, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which is a heritage railway.

Depending on how far you want to walk you could either get off the bus at Egton, Grosmont or Sleights.

Bus

I used 96 Whitby - Grosmont Station - Lealholmside which was operated by 21 Transport. If you plan to use this check with the operators before you go as bus franchises and timetables do change.

I walked down to Whitby to catch the bus as described on the page here.

I got off the bus at Egton Bridge. On that occasion the bus was facing in the opposite direction to usual because if was diverted by roadworks:

Egton Bridge to Grosmont Station

I went along a long straight drive called Barnards Road:

The drive turned left and under the railway:

When the path emerges to road (Front Street) there is an option to turn right to take a diversion to see Grosmont Station or turn left to continue the walk.

Grosmont Station to Sleights

Grosmont Station is a junction between the Esk Valley Line, which is part of the national rail network, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which is a heritage railway:

In March they were painting and cleaning the station ready for the start of the season.

From Grosmont Station walk up Front Street to Priory Farm:

At Priory Farm turn right along Barnard's Road then Priory Lane.

This pond always has ducks or geese in it:

At Fotherleys Farm a footpath diverges to the left and up through the woods

I had my packed lunch on this stone bench at Newbiggin Hall Farm.

Sleights Station to Larpool Hall

When the lane emerges to the A169 don't cross the river by the road bridge, instead continue ahead to the footbridge.

Cross the railway at Sleights station

Up Lowdale Lane and left onto Echo Hill. A footpath on the right take you up here with views of Ruswarp and Larpool Viaduct:

Ruswarp station:

Along the River Esk and under the Larpool Viaduct, then back along the former railway incline and over the Viaduct and back to Larpool Hall.

About This Site

Here is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited.

The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost.

This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website.
