Getting to Larpool Hall by Public Transport

There is a large train station in the centre of Whitby unfortunately there aren't many trains, only a few per day. The trains go to Middlesbrough and Newcastle which is not very convenient if you are coming from London or the south.
I usually use the branch line from York to Scarborough and then catch a bus to Whitby. These buses are reasonably frequent. An advantage of this route is that you can get off the bus just before Whitby at Sainsbury's or Eskdale Road because you don't want to walk all the way up from Whitby to the house with your luggage.
Train to Scarborough then Bus
A more practical route is to go via Scarborough. There is a branch line from York to Scarborough.
There is about 1 train per hour from York to Scarborough. These alternate between trains that start in York and trains that start in Manchester / Leeds.
This line has a much more frequent service than the Esk Valley Line.
I think its worth considering staying over for a few nights at York or Scarborough, to break the journey, on the way to or from Whitby. There are Premier Inns or Travelodges at either.

Train From York to Scarborough
York is quite convenient to transit through, especially if you are traveling from the south.
If you are traveling a long distance it might be worth breaking the journey and staying a night or two at a hotel in York as described on the page here.

From Scarborough catch a bus to Whitby
Find the bus stop for X93 and X94 busses (assuming they have not renumbered them since I did this route).
I used X93/X94 (Middlesbrough - Guisborough - Whitby - Scarborough) which was operated by Arriva. This was a frequent service about every half hour. If you plan to use this check with the operators before you go as bus franchises and timetables do change.
The centre of Whitby is very crowded and it is a long walk up to the HF house so it is best to get off the bus just before Whitby at Sainsbury's or Eskdale Road.

The bus goes reasonably close to Larpool Hall so its best not to stay on the bus all the way to the centre of Whitby. Get off the bus just after it passes a small roundabout. |

After the small roundabout there are some retail units including Sainsbury's on the right hand side. This is when you need to ring the bell and get off. |

| If you get off at the Eskdale Road stop continue walking in the direction the bus was going until you get to Eskdale Road. walk along Eskdale Road. An alternative to Eskdale Road is to walk through the cemetery. |  |
If you miss the stop there is another bus stop before the bridge. If you are still on the bus when it goes over the bridge you might as well continue to Whitby bus station and then get a bus or taxi back. |

Eskdale Road goes through a newish housing estate:
At the end turn left into Larpool Lane and continue to Larpool Drive which is the entrance to HF.

840 Coastliner Bus: Leeds - York - Malton - Pickering - Whitby
There is a bus service to Whitby from Leeds and York. If you plan to use this check with the operators before you go as bus franchises and timetables do change.

I have not used this service myself but last time I checked there were 3 busses a day arriving at Whitby at 10:38, 12:43 and 14:43. These busses appear on the York station departure board: |

The bus takes you from York station to the centre of Whitby. It takes about 2 and a half hours and my fellow HF guests, who used the bus, said they could use their free bus passes.
When you get to Whitby bus station you need to get up to the house by bus or taxi, or you could walk which would be hard with luggage.

Taxi from Whitby bus station/railways station to Larpool Hall was around £7.20 earlier this year. |
Coastliner Bus via Scarborough
There is also a Coastliner service from York to Scarborough. So if you miss the Whitby bus it might be possible to get the Scarborough bus instead and then get the Scarborough to Whitby bus as above (although it would probably be faster to go from York to Scarborough by train.
Esk Valley Line
The Esk Valley Line is very scenic but not the most practical route for most people.
