Getting to Longmynd Hotel, Church Stretton by Public Transport
| This page is about getting to Longmynd Hotel by Public Transport. For other information about staying at Church Stretton see the page here. |
Church Stretton is very good for traveling by train (provided you dont mind wheeling your case uphill) and there are lots of walks from the house. So 7-night self-guided without a car is a good option if you like some uphill walking.
Trains go to Church Stretton from Cardiff and Newport from the south. From the north trains come from Shrewsbury, Manchester and Holyhead.
From London, many routes are possible but I usually go via Newport. Unfortunately when I get to Newport, late morning, there seems to be a 2 hour gap between trains. Then when the train gets in from Cardiff it is already quite full and there are a lot of people waiting at Newport to get on. So I sometimes have to stand for the first few stations. People get out at most stations and by Abergavenny there is usually more space.
Longmynd Hotel is not too far to walk from the railway station for most people. There aren't any taxi companies based in Church Stretton so, if you need a taxi it comes from Shrewsbury which makes it expensive.
As you can see from the picture below Longmynd Hotel is higher than than the village so there is some uphill involved.
Church Stretton Station to Longmynd Hotel via Rectory Field
When you get to Church Stretton walk along the drive to the road. If your train came from the south walk directly out of the station. If your train came from the north cross the bridge or, if you don't want to use the steps, then you can go out of the station on that side and walk round via the petrol station and the road bridge.
Follow the road round from the station.
When you get to the road (Sandford Avenue - B4371) turn left along this road past all the shops.
Past the outdoor depot (which might be useful if you have forgotten any walking gear).
Walk past the shops. When you get to the crossroads with the B5477 you have a choice. You could either go:
- via Rectory Field which is a grass slope. I didn't have any problem taking my wheelie case up there.
- If you don't like the look of Rectory Field you can go up Cunnery Road which is slightly less steep and is a road surface all the way.
If you choose Rectory Field then go straight ahead at this crossroads.
Turn left at the end along here:
Then go right through the gates in the picture below.
Go up the grass slope keeping to the left (don't go all the way to the top past the white house on the right) instead leave the park on the left. The entrance to HF is on the other side of the road.
There are some benches at the bottom of the slope:
Its very difficult to judge the steepness of the slope from these pictures because the camera is pointing up a bit.
You can either go up the grass on the left or the track in the trees but make sure you go to the left of the white building shown (dont go all the way to the top).
At the top keep to the left here:
When you get to a small car park the HF house is opposite:
Church Stretton Station to Longmynd Hotel via Cunnery Road
If, instead, you have chosen to go via Cunnery Road then go left at the crossroads pictured above and go along High Street B5477.
Go along here:
Turn right at the junction shown below and follow the road up to HF entrance.

Bus
In addition to the train there is also a bus between Shrewsbury and Ludlow. As long as I have been going to Church Stretton it has been the 435 operated by Minsterley Motors. At Shrewsbury there is a bus station. At Ludlow the bus sets down at the Aldi supermarket, the railway station and Upper Galdeford and picks up on Corve Street (just below the Compasses Inn). |

About This SiteHere is some information I have gathered together about getting to and walking from HF houses when leaving the car at home. On these pages I have also put some history about former HF houses I have visited. The information here is based on my visits to HF houses over the years. It may be out of date so don't rely on anything here without checking. If you find any errors why not let others know by putting a post on the HF Holiday Fans ( unofficial) Facebook forum. I will try to quote such posts here so they don't get lost. This is information I have discovered over the years which would have been useful to know before. Unfortunately the travel information on the HF website, for getting to houses by public transport, is poor. I think it would be better if the information on this page were on the HF website. |
